From the breathtaking scenery of Llŷn Peninsula to charming seaside towns like Conwy and the rugged beauty of Anglesey, Wales will surely take your breath away! People from all over the UK would come here to relax by the coast, enjoy some water sports, or simply take in the county’s stunning beauty. Here are some of the best coastal getaways in Wales where you can spend an amazing beach time.

Coastal Getaways in Wales

Llŷn Peninsula

The Llŷn Peninsula is a 30-mile peninsula extending into the Irish Sea from Northwest Wales. Tucked within Snowdonia’s craggy peaks and sandwiched by the Cardigan Bay and the Irish Sea, the Llŷn Peninsula is famous for its laidback beaches that attract thousands of visitors, especially in the summer season.

The beaches of the Llŷn Peninsula are also great for surfing and other water sports. If you’re here for surfing, this Backpackerboy’s Ultimate Guide for Surfing in North Wales will come in handy. The Marian y De Beach is the perfect spot for water sports and family days out. It’s located in the town of Pwllheli, also home to a huge marina with access to Anglesey and Cardigan Bay.

As part of the AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), the Llŷn Peninsula is home to family-friendly resorts and laidback beaches, drawing many visitors from the UK and beyond. The cosy seaside towns of Abersoch, Pwllheli, and Criccieth on the southern shores have such a loyal following due to their breathtaking views! Meanwhile, Llŷn is home to many archaeological sites that tell an unbroken story that started from prehistoric times.

Newport

There’s something for everyone to do in Newport. This pretty seaside town is home to intriguing historical sites and interesting attractions. Whether you’re looking to visit modern art galleries, explore ancient Roman sites, enjoy camping and wildlife watching, or go hiking on its incredible coastline, Newport offers some of the best coastal experiences in Wales.

One of the best things to do in Newport is to go on a hike. You will find many great walks along the Pembrokeshire Coast, running for 186 miles and passing through golden beaches and towering cliffs! The Stackpole & Barafundle circular walk is highly recommended for enjoying a great circular walk by the coast. Its coastal section will lead you to magnificent headlands, with views stretching past rugged cliffs and into the surging ocean underneath. Along the way, you’ll come across a tiny harbour and a beautiful beach, the Barafundle beach. As one of the finest beaches in the UK, this beach is backed by dunes with towering cliffs rising on both of its sides.

It’s highly recommended that you spend a few days in Newport if you plan to hike its scenic coast and explore its historical sites. Check out Independent Cottages for some of the best holiday cottages in Wales to look for accommodation that suits you best.

Conwy

Conwy castle

Conwy is one of the UK’s best-preserved medieval towns, famous for its extensive sandy beaches, ancient walls, and beautiful historic buildings, such as the Conwy Castle, a World Heritage Site. From the castle, you can admire the breathtaking views that stretch into the Snowdonia mountains and Conwy Estuary.

As one of the prettiest coastal towns in Wales, Conwy is home to stunning beaches. One of these is the Conwy Morfa beach, a large sandy bay that forms a major part of Conwy Bay’s sandy beaches, especially during a low tide. It’s a great spot for swimming and other fun water sports. The beach is also home to a marina that sits right next to a golf course. Wander along the beautiful marina, dotted with shops, cafes, and restaurants.

You’ll find many great walks in and around Conwy if you’re here to hike. The Pensychnant Upland Walk is one of these. It’s a circular walk coming from the top of the Sychnant Pass, which opens to the spectacular views of the Conwy Valley and Carneddau mountain range.

Anglesey

Anglesey Wales

There’s always something happening in Anglesey, from food festivals to music performances, agricultural shows, and fairs, particularly during spring and summer. But there’s more to this small island than its fun festivals. As one of the most tourism-dependent destinations in the UK, Anglesey attracts almost 1.71 million visitors each year.

Nestled along the northwest coast of Wales, the Isle of Anglesey is blessed with 125 miles of spectacular coastline that are all part of the Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s an exciting place to visit any time of the year. In summer, most visitors would head here for the beach. The Llanddwyn Bay is one of the most popular beaches in Anglesey, featuring long miles of sandy coastline with shallow waters and gentle waves.

Llanddwyn Bay is backed by lush forests and dunes that add to its striking scenery and offer a sense of privacy. The bay is popular for families and those into water sports, such as kite surfing. It’s also a convenient base for hikes along the Newborough Forest. If you plan on spending a few days in one of the best places for a coastal holiday in Wales, you’ll find plenty of cozy places to stay perfect for couples or families.

Tenby

Tenby - Coastal Getaways in Wales

Tenby is one of the prettiest seaside towns in Wales, a popular destination for those looking to explore the coast of Wales. For a true coastal getaway, you should visit Tenby Harbour, a tiny and charming harbour where you can enjoy a spot of water sports, such as fishing and going on a boat trip to the nearby Caldey Island.

The soft golden sands of Tenby Harbour Beach attract thousands of visitors each year. Set within the safe harbour walls and only a short walk from the centre of the town, this beach is perfect for young families. It’s also lined with pubs, cafes, and restaurants where you can refuel after a day of water sports. During the colder months, the beach is popular among dog walkers.

With the gorgeous pastel-coloured buildings on the backdrop, surrounded by the deep blue sea, Tenby is undoubtedly one of the prettiest coastal towns in Wales.
